NANOHARD 2009 is the forth forum organized for knowledge dissemination in the field of nanostructured materials, thin films, hard and superhard coatings for advanced applications. Organization of NANOHARD scientific events started in 2005 at the support of the European Commission, Project INCO-CT-2005-016805 RTCNANOHARD. Two international workshops and one conference have been carried out since 2005.
The Central Laboratory of Applied Physics (CLAP)
is an independent organization to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences carrying out scientific, research and
development activities and production in the field of solid-state electronics, micro- and optoelectronics,
semiconductor sensors and sensor devices and corresponded technologies.
IAP was founded in April 1979. In 1984 a subsidiary pilot plant was established, which became the base for launching a Small
Enterprise for sensors and sensor units in October of 1986.
The researchers and engineers at IAP have developed and applied the basic modern technologies of micro- and
optoelectronics such as liquid and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) as well as technologies for ohmic contacts formation,
photolithography, and packaging of the semiconductor devices developed.
A wide range of, photo sensors, magneto sensors, thermo sensors, radiation sensitive and capacitance sensors,
as well as sensor systems have been developed and produced. Microwave sensors, photo probes, and light emitting
diodes over large range of the spectrum have been created. Low noise Shottky field effect transistors (MESFETs)
for satellite TV converters have been made based on molecular beam epitaxial structures.
The semiconductor components and devices have a good market. Over 2 million power infrared light
emitting diodes for remote control have been sold in Russia , Ukraine and Turkey.
During the last 10 years new scientific field, high temperature microelectronic based on the wide band gap
semiconductor SiC, has been developed. High temperature, high power and high frequency SiC MESFETs, high power
and high temperature SiC p-n diodes, and high temperature, high voltage and high frequency SiC p-i-n diodes have
been developed based on European projects. Peltier elements based cooling-heating systems are developing successfully as well.
The newest field in IAP is development and industrial application of nanostructured thin films, hard and superhard coatings.
